Comments: | Fine mask worn in masquerades honoring the royal lineage of the Igala people. The hooded eyes, highly stylized facial features and elaborate patterns of linear striations are typical of masks which originated in the Middle Benue region around the historic confederacy of Apá. This particular mask shows influences from the Fulani and Igbo tribes. From a Philadelphia collection. Most antiques in the collection were purchased at Freeman's, and some from Christie's and Sotheby's. |
